Geocaching becoming hottest craze in Poconos

If you have ever dreamt about hunting for treasure, you might be surprised to learn that there are nearly 2,000 hidden treasures within a 50-mile radius of Stroudsburg. If you\'ve been to Wal-Mart in East Stroudsburg, you have walked near hidden treasure without knowing it.

Thousands of people across the country are hunting for and hiding treasures through geocaching. Still in its infancy, geocaching is a well organized sport. It was developed in May of 2000, shortly after the U.S. government improved personal GPS reception. ....

Local enthusiasts Kathy Sadowski, known as StellerScape in the geochaching world, and her daughter, 12-year-old Michelle, of Stroud Township in about two years have found more 300 nearby geocaches and hidden a number of them as well.

Click Here to read the whole article.

Geocaching Card Game is now available

Press Release for all Geocachers!

First card game about Geocaching is for sale!

“First To Find!” (“FTF!”), the first card game based on the international GPS sport, Geocaching, has been released from production and is now for sale online at www.ftfcardgame.com or on in the In-Gear Store if you click here - Groundspeak Store - \\\"First to Find!\\\".

“FTF!” is a family-friendly, two to four person treasure-hunting-themed card game that can be played in 15-30 minutes. The game has been designed to capture the excitement of the family sport, Geocaching, using stunning and vivid illustrations. The game can also be used as a regular deck of cards and comes in a blue collector\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s tin.

Object of the Game: “FTF!” features cards suited to the seasons - fall, spring, summer, and winter. Players then use a combination of Gear (e.g. bug spray), Movement (e.g. 4x4), and Obstacle (e.g. spider webs) cards to out-trick other players and race to become the first person to find the cache.

Independent game outfit, Solid Wood Productions, LLC, created and pitched the game idea to Groundspeak, parent company of the Geocaching.com site. Groundspeak granted Solid Wood Productions the license to produce the official card game for the increasingly popular sport, finding it to be a great product for the Geocaching community. Ryan Thiegs led the development of the card game in partnership with artist Eric Smith.

The game retails on Geocaching.com for $9.95.

Visit www.ftfcardgame.com to see the card artwork or visit www.Geocaching.com to buy the “FTF!” card game.

Contact: For more information, please contact Eric Thiegs at eric@ftfcardgame.com

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"First to Find!\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"

Geocaching Weekend

Hi All,

I'm excited to be a new member of this community. Though our family is south of your direct area, you all seem to be very active and that's great.

I just wanted to let you all know about an event coming fall to our neighborhood. Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp is offering a Geocachers Weekend, October 13-15th at the camp on Mount Davis. There isn't much of a marketing budget for the program because they are non-profit. But, we are hoping that it's a big sucess. So please consider registering for yourself or passing on the word to fellow Cachers. For more information or to register, call 1-800-YMCA-FUN or visit www.deervalleyymca.org. Hope to see you there!

Carrie Weigley
theweigleys

Treasure hunt or terror threat?

Here is an article that was in the Allentown Morning Call, one very scary comment by the Fire Commissioner would make you think twice about hiding a cache.

Bethlehem will absorb the cost of Tuesday's response, said Fire Commissioner George Barkanic, but if calls about suspicious packages continue to come in, the costs of investigating them will be paid by the people who hid the caches.

Visit our poll and let us know what you think...

Geocaching game triggers bomb squad alert in Bethlehem.
By Pamela Lehman
Of The Morning Call

A PennDOT worker salting roads about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday saw a woman in dark clothes walk down a Bethlehem hill, pause at a tree along Hellertown Road near the Interstate 78 overpass, turn around and get on a bus.

Sidney Reph followed the woman's footprints in the snow, and beneath the tree found a tarp hiding an ammunition box with a combination lock.

He told police he ''got away as fast as possible'' because he thought it could be a bomb. Firefighters, police officers and bomb squad technicians secured the area while investigating the mysterious box with ''This is a game'' written on the front.

Link to the full article.

PA Geocaching Trails

Dear Friends:

With the advent of the bookmarks on the geocaching.com website an idea was spawned by some Philadelphia area cachers. Why not list the caches in some sort of logical order to assist newbies or those from out of town who may not be familiar with the area.

Look at this page to see what we mean:

http://www.geocities.com/pageocachers/trails/philly.html

We want to expand this idea to cachers from across the state of Pennsylvania. If you would like to contribute, or have any questions, contact Bruce Andersen at bgandersen@gmail.com.

Happy Caching!
Geocache player broke all the rules of Internet treasure hunt

BOISE -- Tuesday?s closure of Highway 55 has brought a lot of attention to something called geocaching.

Idaho State Police

Police say this green bucket beneath the Rainbow Bridge contains trinkets for a popular Internet treasure hunt game known as geocaching. It did not contain explosives as first feared.

This was not the first time that a geocache has been mistaken for a possible bomb.

Police say it was the third or fourth time the Boise bomb squad has responded to a false alarm.

Here is a link to the full article.

Geocache player broke all the rules of Internet treasure hunt
